In the beginning of the 20th century, the human mind was much
more inclined to search for scientific  answers
to society’s problems by perfecting the human race by applying the laws of
genetic heredity. In 1883, Sir Francis Galton, a respected British scientist, first
used the term Eugenics, “the study of all agencies under human control which
can improve or impair the racial quality of future generations.” He believed that the
human race could help direct its future by selectively breeding individuals who
have “desired” traits. This idea appealed to many people, who thought that
there was a “natural” way to bring about a utopian society just as nature
“weeds out the unfit” among animals, so too should human society “weed
out” its unfit members. In creating a world where human beings would be
kind, intelligent, brave and honest while crime and disease could be eradicated.
Though Galton’s ideas planed to improve the human race through selective
breeding never reached its full accomplishment in Britain; his idea eventually
took sinister turns being adapted by the Nazis, where eugenics gained much
criticism, scrutiny and disapproval.

Today, we have the
technology that makes it possible to more direct with altering the genetic
composition of an individual.
Approximately 1 in every 16 babies born in the United States is born with some
birth defect. When thinking about those affected by genetic diseases, it is tempting
to re consider the idea for state control or voluntary eugenics where parents
are able to make the choice. While prenatal tests have improved and are
practiced more, they are sometimes compared with eugenics. Amniocentesis, in
when genetic testing of unborn babies is performed, for when most anomalies are
found, there is no treatment, leaving parents with the choice to abort or
continue with pregnancy. Since abortion has been connected with eugenics, medical
methods of abortion have advanced becoming more sophisticated, while fertility
control methods have been a presence in most human societies in one form or
another and always involve the question of the potential person the child will
be and what sort of life the child will potentially have. Mentions of eugenics
in discussions of abortion appear on both sides: pro-choice advocates are
concerned about government control of fertility, and antiabortion activists
attempt to use eugenic associations with abortion and to compare such
procedures with the Holocaust.

When discussing eugenics, one thing that many people disagree upon is whether or
not eugenics is ethically right or wrong. Engineering a perfect
or desirable offspring is very expensive. Not allowing many couples who are
listed as “minorities” to afford hiring a complex team of geneticists to
engineer their dream perfect baby. This, furthering the wide gap between the
rich and poor, with the rich producing the more dominant and more superior
offspring to be classified as the only desirable individuals in society. The
human race is diverse because of the diversity of where individuals originated
from. But when new generation of humans are controlled genetically, eliminating
diversity and creates a unified type of race that is deemed perfect and
superior. Another point to discuss is the possibility of extreme discrimination
against natural born babies. Natural born babies will then be discriminated and
considered to be inferior to those engineered ones with healthier bodies,
smarter minds and better looks. As mentioned before, Eugenics ideology took sinister turns being adapted by the Nazis, where
eugenics gained much criticism, scrutiny and disapproval. Engineered artificial
human race ideology has its dark, disastrous foundations rooted in the eugenics
program of the Nazis in the 1940’s as we know, affected more than 6 million
people during the Holocaust. Even if future eugenics programs are created with
the best of intentions, it will always be influenced by the subjective beliefs
of those in power to be the deciding what determines what traits are desirable
and undesirable. Lastly, it may multiple the chance of genetic mistakes not
prevent them from forming in the offspring. With many things, there is a slight
catch while altering genes, when the main goal is to prevent unwanted genetics
and cause mistakes instead. In the future, the elimination of genetic disorders
may produce humans with similar genetic makeup and a superficial gene pool. With
circling back to the case of causing alienation from genetically engineered
babies versus purebreds leading to discrimination once again.

With the advancement of eugenics it allows a child’s medical needs to
be assessed, allowing parents to already know the
DNA makeup of their unborn child allowing the parent to take appropriate
actions and be prepared to meet his or her future child’s medical needs.
Preventing negative hereditary conditions engineering the genetic makeup of a
child can eliminate hereditary conditions that lead to deformities, mental and
physical problems. It then acts as a preemptive protection for the child so
that he or she will no longer worry about inheriting genetic disorders from his
or her ancestry. With the help of eugenics, the control of gender offspring is
available; allowing parents who want to have male or female children can allow
them to have family gender variety eliminating unnecessary surprises when it
comes to parenting. Studies show that bad behaviors are due to faulty mental
processes found in the brain. By altering the DNA makeup of babies, these
mental processes can be controlled and help create individuals that are better
versions of themselves, kinder, more generous, hardworking, smarter, better, healthier
individuals in society.

One thing that many people disagree upon
is whether or not eugenics is ethically right or wrong. In objection of eugenics, many medical ethics theories disagree with the ideology
based on the negative impact adapted by the Nazis, eugenics gained much criticism,
scrutiny and disapproval. In regards to medical ethical theories, Rule
utilitarianism focuses on the rightness or wrongness of the rule is if it
increases the total happiness of the affected parties, with majority rules
applying. Rule utilitarianism grants eugenics to be right considering some
factors. Eugenics is in no way mandatory, allowing parents to proceed with
pregnancies on their terms. With the advancement, it reduces and eliminates
having children with genetic disorders and deformities. There is a sense relief
and freedom and peace of mind for expecting parents from pain and suffering
knowing because of eugenics their offspring will be free from deformity and
hardship later in life causes no harm to either mother or baby.
By manipulating rule utilitarianism, eugenics is objected with the idea that even
life with disabilities is greater than no life at all. Once offspring is tested
for the chance of having disability, the downs spectrum is so broad that some babies
do not have severe issues in life. Lastly, disabled babies future happiness is just
as important as anyone else’s.

 Today, we do
have the technology that makes it possible to more direct with altering the
genetic composition of an individual. Approximately 1 in every 16 babies born in the United
States is born with some birth defect. When thinking about those affected by genetic
diseases, it is tempting to re consider the idea of Eugenics.
